Brilliant Brighton!

12 May 2007. Brighton is one of England's most popular seaside resorts. It's also a favourite for international students. Read our 'Five Reasons to Love Brighton'.

1. The Beach

Of course! Brighton Beach is huge. It needs to be huge because on a sunny day there are so many people. You can't build a sandcastle here as there is no sand (just stones) but there is so much to enjoy here.

2. Brighton Pier

There are two piers in Brighton, both over 100 years old. Sadly, one is derelict, but the other (below) is a major entertainment venue. There is a funfair at the end of the pier, so you can ride on a rollercoaster next to the sea!

3. The Royal Pavilion

In the late 18th century, Brighton became fashionable after people started believing the seawater was good for their health. One visitor was George, Prince of Wales, who later became King George IV. He bought a farmhouse, and later, ordered the building of an Indian-style palace. The king loved art, fashion, architecture and gambling, and this palace shows his eccentric character. The building's interior is Chinese-style, brightly-coloured and full of luxurious furniture. It is definitely worth visiting.

4. The North Laine

Brighton's shopping area called 'The North Laine' is very different from most UK city centres. There are no chain stores here - just small, individual shops with lots of character. There are also a lot of cafes here. The area is full of life, especially because all the buildings are brightly coloured. Cool!

5. Culture

Brighton is a truly vibrant city and attracts many artists and musicians. The Brighton Festival is the biggest arts festival in England. Brighton is well-known for its pubs and nightclubs, and also its restaurants, cafes and theatres. There are great family attractions such as the Sea Life Centre and the Toy Museum. There is also a large gay and lesbian community, and even a nudist beach (not common in UK cities!). In this cultural and cosmopolitan city there is something for everyone...

...and finally, there are many language schools in Brighton, so it's a great place to study English.
